‘In The Realm Of The Senses’ was made in February 2009. A friend had told me about the RPM Challenge, where you make an album from scratch (writing, recording, everything) within the month of February. I’d just started messing around with programmed beats and loops. A lot of the tracks start from a simple groove and spiral out from there. It evolved to be mostly instrumental. The small handful of lyrical numbers seem a little incongruous in that respect, but they all came out of the same burst of writing. A special mention goes to Kim Simpson who sings the hook on ‘The Drone You Are’. The title track took its inspiration from a 1976 film of the same name. I’d recently got broadband for the first time and downloaded a random bunch of old banned movies, which I’d always been too shy to borrow or buy. ‘In The Realm Of The Senses’ was one of them. The pitch shifted ukelele in the song reminded me of the sound of a Koto. I’ve not done the RPM Challenge since.
